Social Security COLA 2027 Could Boost Monthly Checks by Nearly $74: What Retirees Need to Know

Millions of Social Security recipients could see a larger monthly benefit in 2027 if the latest inflation forecast holds.

A new projection from The Senior Citizens League (TSCL) estimates that the 2027 cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) will come in at 3.8%, giving retirees a bigger increase than they received this year. While the figure is still preliminary, it offers an early look at how benefits may change to help keep up with rising prices.

Projected 2027 COLA Points to Bigger Monthly Payments

According to TSCL, the projected 3.8% COLA is one full percentage point higher than the 2.8% adjustment applied for the previous year.

If that estimate becomes reality, the average monthly Social Security benefit would increase by about $73.62. That would raise the typical payment from $1,937.53 to approximately $2,011.15.

For retirees living on fixed incomes, that extra money could help offset higher costs for essentials such as groceries, housing, utilities, and healthcare.

How the Increase Compares With Past COLAs

If the projected 3.8% adjustment is approved, it would rank as the 17th-largest Social Security COLA since 1977.

While it would fall well below the unusually large increases seen during periods of elevated inflation in recent years, it would still represent a meaningful boost for millions of beneficiaries.

Why COLA Matters

The annual cost-of-living adjustment is designed to preserve the purchasing power of Social Security benefits as consumer prices rise.

Each year’s increase is based on inflation data, helping ensure that retirees and other beneficiaries are better able to manage higher living expenses over time.

When Will the Official 2027 COLA Be Announced?

The Social Security Administration (SSA) is expected to announce the official 2027 COLA in mid-October.

Until then, monthly projections from The Senior Citizens League provide one of the most closely watched estimates. The advocacy group regularly updates its forecast as new inflation data becomes available, meaning the final COLA could still change before the official announcement.

What Retirees Should Watch Next

For now, the 3.8% projection offers an encouraging sign for retirees hoping to see larger Social Security checks next year.

However, the final adjustment will depend on inflation data collected in the coming months. Beneficiaries should watch for the SSA’s official announcement in October, when the exact percentage—and the amount of the increase—will be confirmed.
